Frenzy Island Kindle Edition

"The boat hit shore at 09:27 EAT. We can be exact on this because it was picked up by the perimeter cameras. It was an old open lifeboat, navy blue, and we counted seven people on board. Eight if you want to include the baby. Most of them didn't survive more than ten minutes." Two sisters and a baby, shipwrecked refugees, wash up on a mysterious east African Island crawling with giant, blue-skinned savages. They flee to an abandoned scientific facility where incredible and terrifying experiments have been taking place, experiments that could change the course of human history. Meanwhile, the only person who can save them is a lowly monitoring station employee half a world away in Arizona - but the clock is ticking, and the universe is about to come calling.

I'm usually a very slow reader; however, I devoured Frenzy Island in a few sittings! I was heavily invested in the story, especially the sisters' arc which had me turning pages quickly to find out what happens next.

The writing style is so charming and witty, and it felt like I was sitting around a fire, listening to a ghost story on Halloween night. The words flowed so seamlessly and beautifully, pulling me in and keeping me engaged until the very last page.

I don't read many sci-fi/horror books, but I'm glad I picked this one. It was a thrilling adventure with cool sci-fi elements and a cast of interesting characters with a lot of depth. Esperance, Godriva, Vital, Cynthia, and Buki—they were all people I would love to meet in real life...except maybe Mr. B, and Allison (kinda bossy :D :D). Overall, it's a highly recommended book if you're in for a sci-fi/horror ride.

    [Blurb goes here]

This is the debut Novella from Keith Thomas. You might not be familiar with the author, so just a couple of tidbits: He's the writer/director of the film "The Vigil", 91% fresh, audience score 51%, on Rotten Tomatoes. He also credited as director of the "Pickman's Model" episode from "Gulliermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities" (now on Netflix), one of the great episodes in Del Toro's anthology. With these credentials, it's hard to look away from this book.

The Dunnie is loosely based in English-Scottish lore.

Asher, a problematic boy (twelve), travels with his mom to his grandfathers house. His 'Pa', as he calls him, used to be an ill tempered man, age and the apparent wisdom that comes with it, changed him. Unfortunately, he's starting to suffer from dementia. His two daughters agree that he has to go to a retirement home. While lucid, Pa tells his grandson that he can't leave his house, he has to stay there to feed the Dunnie. His grandson thinks that this is all part of his onset dementia and ignores him...that is, until he listens to a ragged breathing coming from the vents inside his grandfather's home.

When trying to feed the Dunnie with a sheep, Pa gets stopped by his daughter. He argues with Asher that it's been two weeks since he last feed the creature. That's when everything goes sideways.

The author crafts a compelling and eerie tale. No if and buts there. While Asher, his mom and Pa get a wonderful treatment and are perfectly fleshed out, this is not the case for the rest of the cast. Those are underdeveloped: one put into the situation, solely to get hurt by the creature. Funny how, as soon as that character makes an entrance, you'll know what awaits.

The writing is great. The atmosphere gets into scary territory, and fast! I mean, the Dunnie alone is terrifying! I truly recommend this one to horror fans, you won't be disappointed!

Thank you for the advanced copy!

Not too many proofreading errors, but my favorite was using verbatim for verboten. As for the content, plot is fascinating, and if there's a book 2, I want it. The characters are realistic and largely likeable. The bad guys are delightfully hateable. Just remember that the author is from Wales, so you'll see many British spellings and usages. The characters still come across as American or Berundian.

This book seemed strange at the beginning...and then stranger as it moved along. So many things happened independently and simultaneously. I found it hard to put down. An excellent book!

Frenzy Island by Richard E. Rock has engaging characters, an intriguing plot, and quick-paced action scenes.
There were a few things that a rewrite and a good editor could smooth out but it was still fun overall.
Don't be fooled by the blurb though--it isn't really like a mash-up of Jurassic Park and Contact. The blurb for the book says, "Two sisters and a baby, shipwrecked refugees, wash up on a mysterious east African Island crawling with giant, blue-skinned savages. They flee to an abandoned scientific facility where incredible and terrifying experiments have been taking place, experiments that could change the course of human history."
As I said the characters are enjoyable and the premise was intriguing, but the tone of the book seemed to wander at times. Most times when the blue beast men were mentioned I chuckled because all I could picture were nude, zombie smurfs...sigh. I think I may have ruined parts of it for myself.
Thank you to #NetGalley., #CranthorpeMillnerPublishers, and Richard E. Rock for the ARC of #FrenzyIsland.

I really did enjoy this fast paced, never ending adrenalin, and spectacular story. Richard E. Rock is a great writer that can fill you with hope and dread by the magic of his words.

This story is about two sisters, Esperance and Godriva, stranded on an island that once held science experiments with detrimental consequences. Both sisters try to survive this harsh environment and find a way off the island. With the help from Cynthia, an employee of the company who owns this island, they are assisted in trying to leave the island before disaster strikes the island again.

The last 50% of this story was so fast paced and exhilarating. I found myself invested in finding out how this could all end. Boy was I impressed and now I must now what comes next. I need to know what happens!!

Frenzy Island is a well-written thrill of a ride, with relatable and loved characters. The love between the refugee sisters was heartfelt, they balanced their strengths and weaknesses to navigate through the “frenzy”. I thoroughly enjoyed the scary blue men, mutated savages who didn’t know any better (or did they?) I had a hard time putting it down! Looking forward to more books from this talented author.

Once I started this book, I couldn’t put it down and read it in one sitting. The characters are realistic, the storyline is gripping, and the action moves along, taking you with it. There were several moments when I had tears in my eyes which shows I’d become invested in the characters.

The idea of finding a scapegoat to blame, and the concept of flooding the media etc with so much information that the truth is lost rings so true in this day and age - and Mr Wurd certainly put me in mind of one or two billionaires who have so much money, their egos take over - and to quote from a famous film they become ‘so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should.’ Read and enjoy!
