Just Add Salt (Hetta Coffey Series, Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 4,042 ratings

From USA Today Bestselling and Award-Winning Author, Jinx Schwartz!

Hetta Coffey is a sassy Texan with a snazzy yacht, and she's not afraid to use it!

A globe-trotting engineer with attitude, a penchant for trouble, and a yacht, Hetta is back, and this time she's steering us into hot Mexican waters.

Miffed that vacation plans with her chronically absent boyfriend, Jenks Jenkins, have gone awry, she accepts a job in Baja.

>>>So what, if she and her friend Jan are spectacularly unqualified to take her yacht on a thousand-mile cruise in the eastern Pacific Ocean during hurricane season?

Hiring a handsome, if somewhat fishy captain for the trip might keep them off the rocks, but probably won't do the same for her future with Jenks. Meanwhile, a little eye candy on board can't be all bad.

Hetta's fierce independence impels her to tackle a very profitable (if environmentally and politically incorrect) project south of the border. True to form, her irreverent nature and disregard for danger soon swamps her in a sea of mayhem, illegal aliens, a pesky whale, and a menacing Mexican machinator.

>>>Set sail for Baja Mexico's Magdalena Bay as Hetta Coffey leads us once more into a morass of intrigue that will keep you laughing, breathless, and wanting more!

Editorial Reviews

Review

When I finished the first book in the series, I realized I had Hetta withdrawals. I hurried to Amazon and purchased Just Add Salt. I would advise reading the first book first because it supplies the background - where it all began. But I enjoyed the second book even more than the first. There is danger from the get-go and tension on every page. I love a mystery with a touch of romance, and this book has it all. What it doesn't have is over-the-top graphic violence or explicit sex. The Hetta Coffey mysteries are a refreshing change and I look forward to reading more. -- Laurie Hanan, author of the Louise Golden Hawaiian mysteries

I defy you not to laugh out loud at the antics of Hetta and Jan!

I defy you not to laugh out loud at the antics of Hetta and Jan!
Hetta and Jan her cohort in trouble really get in a mess this time around! They were supposed to meet up with their boyfriends and go on Hetta's boat for a vacation--they got a job. Hetta asnd Jan were not very happy --Hetta decided to grab a job and taker the boat out on her own (with Jan of course). Neither of the woman really knew how to navigate or even really anything about it--AND in order to take the boat into foreign weater they needed a cvaptain. They found one-or rather he found them--and off they went! The mishaps along the way will make you laugh as the two women tried to get used to the chavanist they had as a captain! When a blue fin whale decided he was in love with the boat--they managed to get a guy who was a whale specialist on board. Then some real trouble happens-aside from a major hurricane---and they have to hide the boat. The two guys get taken by the bad guys and Hetta and Jan have to figure out a way out of all this by themselves--not leaving the boat behind! So who comes to save the day? Their boyfriends are supposedly in Kuwait. AND did the Blue Fin whale ever find one of his own kind and leave Hetta's boat alone. Our lovesick whale does have something to do with saving them too!I defy you not to laugh out loud at the antics of Hetta and Jan as they head off into the blue Pacific!!

Hilarious, witty, and entertaining are words that best describe this fast-paced adventure set in Mexico. The rapport between gutsy Hetta Coffey and her obliging sidekick, Jan, is humorous yet believable as these two women struggle to get out of life-threatening situations that come at them from all angles. The descriptions of the characters are distinct and I could picture each one in my mind--including the whale! Although I'm not familiar with the technical aspects of life aboard a yacht, the detailed explanations weaved throughout the story made it easier to grasp the gist of it. I highly recommend this action-packed mystery and look forward to reading more books in the series.

Jinx Schwartz is at it again in Just Add Salt although the salt is just a tiny subplot of the two women who just can't get things right or stay out of trouble. If you've ever owned a boat, and I've had several, you can appreciate some of what they do and go through. I must admit if I was on a yacht this size in the middle of a hurricane or had a 65 to 75 foot whale swim up alongside I wouldn't be anywhere near as calm or sarcastic as these two, but I can see two women, especially these two do exactly what Jinx wrote about them. Fearless, perhaps even stupid, they frolic their way in and out of danger and defy certain death situations with unbelievable ease. In the first Hetta Coffey book Just Add Water, we are introduced to these two nutty women and for whatever strange reason you can come up with, you find yourself enjoying their escapades. This time the boyfriends go off on their own trip and promise to return in time to take a cruise to Mexico on Hetta's new floating home. The deal changes, Hetta gets a job, Jenks the boyfriend gets a job and along comes the hired and mysterious Captain Fabio. Jan just seems to go with the flow. The salt plot is convoluted and it doesn't matter. The bad Mexican crook could cut their heads heads off but that doesn't bother the two women either and the reader goes long with that as well. In this second in the series there are some sequences that seem hurried or written quickly, there are some words missing and some misused and non of that skims the surface of enjoyment from the read. I gave it 5 stars because it's fun to read and you can't take anything seriously or it would spoil the fun.

A delightful romantic mystery. Hetta Coffey, with her best friend and cousin, Jan, hire a captain to sail Hetta's yacht to Caro, Mexico. The yacht is also Hetta's home. The girls are upset because their boyfriends have taken a job overseas and won't be back in time to leave before hurricane season. Hetta takes what appears to be a quick, easy job to be completed on the way down, and that is when the fun begins. Lots of laugh-out-loud situations; characters are well developed and interesting. A good read!

If you like intrigue and excitement you will love Just Add Salt by Jinx Schwartz. It is full of action and adventure which kept me glued to the pages from start to finish.

The author did a great job of developing a story which was fast paced and full of intrigue. It has a well develop storyline which never loses its continuity. I found it to be a fun read and very believable.

Jinx Schwartz developed excellent characters which were very believable and real. It was easy to identify with them and follow the storyline. I have read the first volume, Just Add Water (see earlier review), and now this volume just adds to the strength of the lead heroin.

I really enjoyed Just Add Salt by Jinx Schwartz and I highly recommend this book to all readers.

Okay, I admit it, I couldn't help liking this one. Sure, Hetta's perspective is a little conservative in a way that's mildly cringey, and the book's a little 80s, but this one is too fun to resist.

Hetta's narrative voice shines, and the characters are fun, and it's got the sort of engaging, uproarious events that will draw a giggle out of even reluctant readers. Nautical chick lit would hardly be something I'd peg as enjoyable, but sometimes a book is so good it transcends genre preferences. I love that Hetta's middle-aged and a dyed redhead, too; she's realistic and fun, and there aren't enough books with women over forty in the spotlight. Her relationship with Jan, a Thelma and Louise-style, er...lady bromance...is one of the most fun elements of the book.

My only real complaint is that an element hinted at in the beginning never comes to fruition, and the historical prologue didn't have enough bearing on the rest of the story. The ending's pacing is pretty wobbly, too.

Still, you don't have to read the first book to jump into the series here. I don't think I'll be able to resist reading the rest of them.

As usual what starts out as a purely innocent job offered by the Trob turns on a dime into an international gun totin' incident. A Japanese company hired Hetta to scout out a proposed site in Mexico for a project that some unsavory locals set sights on fouling up and taking the windfall while eliminating any huddles in their path. It gets really ugly and Hetta has to pull out all the stops to save herself, Jan, Raymond Johnson and crew from a very untimely ending. Great read!

The main character caught my attention right from the start, and continued with just the right mix of ditziness with a hard practical edge underneath. Storyline was believable, and contemporary.
.If you like your heroines to be feminine but still tough with it, not helpless pieces of fluff, then I think you should enjoy this. Once again I am looking forward to acquiring the rest of this series.
I am not inclined to give 5 stars lightly and my review ratings are based mainly on entertainment value, but having said that, poor writing, editing, continuity, characterisation, poor plot Eric all individually, ( or collectively) detract from the experience so generally good, (or better) aspects of all these must co-exist for a great experience. Unlike a movie you can' t forgive a book because it has great graphics, or music, or you really like the actor regardless etc.

Loved this book, actually made me laugh quite a lot, it's my sort of dry sense of humour. Madcap characters, but we all know people like that, or st least I do.
Will definitely be looking out for the first book and then will catch up with the rest, great fun and an interesting mystery.

I enjoyed this second title about Hetta Coffy enormously. The first "Just add Water" introduces us to Hetta, who for various reasons decides to abandon life on the land and buy a boat. This second installement gives us a fast amusing story, where murder is but one of the problems Hetta comes up against. She and her friend Jan are annoyed when their men take a job abroad instead of the planned ocean-going trip to Mexico, so they go without them. Add a shady sea captain, the odd gangster, amorous Whales and frightening hurricanes to the trip. You have a volatile mix and once you add Hetta as well! Its interesting, amusing and good for the soul. Have fun.

If Amazon allows it, I'm just going to cut-and-paste this review for any of the first five Hetta Coffey series by Jinx Schwartz.

I got sucked into downloading one of these books by a Bookbub freebie promotion. I think it was number 2. But then, since I was already on the site, and I don't like to read series fiction out of order, I decided to buy the first one and start with that... and well, I was already there, so I bought number's three and four. Later, having enjoyed the first four, I bought the fifth in the series.

So that's the essence of my review. I enjoyed the first one enough to start reading the second, and then the third. It took me just over a week to go through all five. Schwartz started off well, and she improved with each successive story. The characters are engaging, the setting is well evoked without excess of language. The stories hang together very well, and move along at a good clip, ensuring that you keep turning pages. In my case, it was page-turn animation, 'cuz I do all my reading on my iPad these days.

If you like a well-written detective/mystery/adventure story, with characters you can like and who grow from book to book, this series is for you.

Recommended. Mind you, I can say that about a fair few other crime/detective/... stories I've been picking up lately, but that is no detraction from my hearty recommendation that you acquire and read Jinx Schwartz' Hetta Coffey novels. They're worth your time.
